Day one found us trying to get away from the
influence of Chicago. It seemed like we had to go all the way
to Nebraska to get away fom Illinois licence plates. I don't have
to tell you all in Chicago just how hot it was when we left. Our
plans were to go as faras we could and camp. By the time we were
ready to camp it was too hot to be out side so we decided to drive
to exhaustion and get a hotel room. By this point Ed was driving
and everything was going great. Then the rain came. It was so
heavy that it sounded like hail hitting the windows. Most everyone
was pulling off the road and trying to huddle under overpasses.
I decided that Ed should keep driving. He did a great job diving
through the worst rain storm that either of had seen for years.
After the storm let up the sky was littered with lightning and
cloud tops that were illuminated by the setting sun. About an
hour later we went through the same kind of very violent storm.
At this point we were halfway across Nebraska.
