Get Well Soon Mayor Daley
Recently Chicago's Mayor, Richard Daley, was injured in a bicycle accident while on vacation in Michigan. As a gesture of good will and a bit of brown nosing I thought it might be a nice idea to send him a get well card. He had some surgery on his left knee and is wearing a brace. He missed a few days of work and does not look like he will be riding anytime soon. At the last couple of meeting that we have had I brought it with me and everyone in attendance signed the card. Travis C. delivered it to City Hall the other day. He told me that when got up to the office it was swarming with police and F.B.I. officers. He approached on officer and told him what he had. The officer then took the card and opened it slowly, smiled when he saw what it was and assured Travis that he would deliver it ti His Honor.
We in Chicago should feel blessed that our Mayor has a vision of the city that includes bicycles. It may not be what the Critical Mass feels is enough but the Mayor,s Bicycle 2000 program is a good start. Richard J. Daley's crowning achievement will no doubt be the opening of more and more public place across our city especially in those parts that have been ignored in the past. Particularly the south side of town where lots of old industry is moving out or has been long gone leaving old buildings and abandoned lots strewn with rubble. Most of these improvements can be seen around the Museum Campus (The Shedd Aquarium, The Field Museum and The Adler Planetarium). The Mayor spearheaded a plan to move on of Chicago's busiest highways away from the lake and into an industrial rail corridor. By doing this a large and very picturesque portion has been returned to the people of Chicago and all that visit. And yes it is full of bike paths going every which way
The following are a couple of pictures of the card that we sent to Mayor Daley. In addition to the card Travis also included an invitation to ride with Critical Mass and a copy of the recent letter to the editor that appeared in the Chicago Tribune regarding the Autumnal Equinox Ambush ride that was the September Critical Mass ride in Chicago.
