During Thanksgiving week in 2002 I moved about 150 yards from where I had been living for seven years. When my landlord decided to raise my rent again I decided that it was time to re-negotiate. Due to Dubya's economic policy of helping Americans by bombing Iraq there are tons of apartments open in Chicago. When my landlord, with five empty apartments, would not re-negotiate. I decided it was time to move. Now the decision of where in Logan Square or to Seattle. With a move of 2/10ths of a mile you can tell Chicago won. After seven years I had accumulated lots of stuff. Since moving to Chicago I have stocked up on everything from camping gear to computers. Now most who know me know I own a small, Japanese, four-cylinder car. I use the thing when I need to move equipment or go to a cousins house in the 'burbs. With such a short move all of my friends wanted to know if I was going to do a bike move. I said it could be done but it wouldn't be done due to the amount of antiques and computers that I have. As the move got closer and I started to see how big these boxes were and how many there were I started to think about renting a truck. Instead I decided to try the move by bike method. Now the only trouble was the holiday weekend. Most of my friends were out of town this weekend so I climbed about 12,000 feet between the two third floor apartments. Oh yea...it snowed three and half inches too. I would like to thank Gin
and Michael for their Fresh Air trailer. Sarah was a huge help with
all the time she gave me in finding boxes, packing and moving it all
downstairs. Gareth pitched in for two-and-a-half loads on the day before
Thanksgiving. Travis gave me three or four hours on Thanksgiving. He
really pushed me to do more loads. On Friday Ed came up and did four
loads with me and on Saturday Ed pulled me through the last of the move.
My Schwilsonn is a product of my pulling bikes out of the trash (this
one in Skokie after a Passover Sedar with cousins) And Alex's love of
bicycles. I could not have made any of this happen without these really
wonderful people giving me a present to be truly thankful for. |

All together I think we did about 12 loads total thought I do not have pictures of all of them. All except two loads were done with the trailers. One of the car loads was my cat and a couple of laundry baskets full of dirty clothes (the new apartment has a washer and dryer). During this load I ran into Chicago Critical Mass! I wish I was close enough to say hi but they were gone in a flash. My new apartment is really great. I look forward to you all coming to visit! Daniel |
